Client Commendations
IT WAS a 'stone surprise' for those who walked into the HDFC bank, D.B. Road branch. An exhibition of handcrafted stone statues, showcasing works of artists from Orissa, was organised by Varnam Handicrafts. “We are exporting these statues to the United States and this is for the first time we are showcasing our creations in India. We have 32 craftsmen with five national award winners creating these works.” C. Praveen of Varnam Exports said. The intricate and painstaking work spoke for itself. Some of the statues on display had taken almost 45 days to complete. Varying from two-and-a-half inches to three feet, the prices of these statues ranged from Rs. 150 to Rs. 17,500. Themes from Indian mythology were chiselled on stone. In one, Krishna indulged in 'Vasthra Chori ' or garment stealing, while in another there was Ganesha in a reclining posture. Standing 2 feet tall, with minutely carved details of Krishna's antics, the 'Vasthra Chori ' cost Rs. 17,500 Prices were determined on the basis of the craftsmanship, work complications and number of days taken to finish the statue, Praveen added. There was little 'Darpani', or a lady watching her reflection in a mirror, and there a was sleeping Ganesha, the Laughing Buddha and 'Vishnu on the leaf. By P. S. N. in Coimbatore Photo: K Ananthan |
